Cultural Heritage...
...at the heart of a nation
The Culture House is a
venue
for exhibitions, meetings,
gatherings, lectures, artistic
events, public ceremonies, and other
occasions. The building is widely
admired as one of Iceland’s national
architectural monuments.
Exhibitions
2004-2005:
Medieval Manuscripts – Eddas and Sagas
Iceland’s principal national
treasures are the medieval vellum
manuscripts. These ancient vellums
preserve the Northern classical
heritage: unique sagas, poems and
narratives, which are often the sole
written sources of information on
the society, religion, and conceptions
of Northern Europe from
pagan times through the tumult of
Viking Expansion, to the settlement
of the Atlantic Islands and the
Christianisation of these northern
peoples.
The National Museum– as it was
The exhibition endeavours to
recreate the atmosphere permeating
the exhibitions of the National
Museum in the early decades of the
20th century, when it was housed in
the garret of the Culture House.

important milestone in Iceland’s
