First concrete casting of New Concert and Conference Centre

A milestone was reached in the construction of The Icelandic National Concert and Conference Centre in Reykjavik when the first concrete was cast in a formal ceremony last weekend. The Mayor of Reykjavik, Minister of Communications and Minister of Education, Science and Culture were among those who helped start the work. The site preparation phase has now concluded and construction begun. This new and striking landmark will rise right in the city centre by the old harbour in 2009 and will offer new and superb facilities for music lovers as well as conference guests. It will include an 1,800-seat concert hall, plus numerous conference halls, allowing it to accommodate a wide range of artists and events. In addition, the Centre will serve as the official home of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. The building, designed by pre-eminent Scandinavian architects and the internationally acclaimed artist Ólafur Elíasson, is set to create the best conditions for Iceland's continually expanding cultural scene.
