The Central Highlands
THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS
Iceland’s forbidding interior is inhabitable and sometimes inhospitable, but the landscape and nature, with its rocky deserts, craggy mountain peaks, ice caps, volcanoes, hidden valleys and hot springs , is stunning and untouched. You should only visit the interior on an organized tour with a guide or in a specially equipped 4-wheel drive vehicle which can tackle the mountain roads, some of which cross unbridged rivers.
Sites include the volcanic crater Askja, and the nearby pool of temperate chalk blue water, Viti (meaning “hell”).
In the south of the interior is Landmannalaugar, a popular location of hot springs and hiking trails in a valley surrounded by incredibly colored mountains.
The interior is only accessible from late June until September each year.
