The East
For those who are not flying, the eastern part of Iceland is the gateway to Europe. The Smyril Line operates a summer season ferry from the port of Seydisfjordur to the Faroe Islands and then on to Denmark or Norway. Seydisfjordur is a beautiful village to visit on its own, as is Bakkagerdi in northern Borgarfjordur Eystri. The east is also easily accessible for others, as there are two flights daily between Reykjavík and Egilsstadir, the region’s hub. There are good hotels, inns and restaurants in Egilsstadir and the surrounding areas.
The region has its own series of long, narrow fjords, said to one of the most beautiful spots in the country, and the town of Egilsstadir is a short drive from Iceland’s biggest forest, Hallormsstadaskogur. Along the way is the beautiful lake, Logurinn, where legend has it that a mysterious creature lives within its depths. Sightseeing cruises are available along the lake. The controversial Karahnjukar dam has been constructed in this region.
