The South
James Bond fans will recognize the massive colored chunks of ice which float in the eerily beautiful Jokulsarlon, or glacial lagoon, on the southeast coast of Iceland. The lagoon featured in Die Another Day, as well as an episode of the Amazing Race.
The south coast is the gateway to the country’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull, and the national parks of Skaftafell and Thorsmork.
Driving along Highway 1 in the south coast, you will also pass long expanses of black sand beaches, the tall and thin Seljalandsfoss waterfalls (which you can walk behind) and on a clear day you can see the famous volcano Mount Hekla in the distance. This is also the area of the now famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano which erupted in March 2010.
Closer to Reykjavik, on the south coast, the charming villages of Stokkseyri and Eyjarbakki are popular day trips from the capital, each with their own character.
