The
Reykjavík Family Park & Zoo in Laugardalur Valley
has been enjoying increasing popularity as an ideal recreation
area where the focus is on families. The parks slogan is
To see, To learn, To be, To do.
Facilities are divided into two sectors: a family park and
a zoo. The zoo is home to all species of Icelandic domestic
animals, as well as seals, reindeer, mink and foxes -
22 species in all. Birds also nest in the compound, making
the zoo a virtual “Noah’s Ark” of Icelandic
animal life. The Family Park contains a range of equipment
and rides for the younger generation, such as bumper boats
and a go-cart course, as well as a variety of other playground
apparatus where kids can vent their energy.
Last summer a Science World Museum was opened in the park
which became an instant hit, and it will be exciting to
see how it develops over the coming years. Objects are designed
to open the minds of the young and older alike to the wonders
of science and technology in an accessible and, above all,
fun way. Science World is different from other museums in
that guests are expected to touch and personally experience
most of the objects. Then there is the coffee-house for
when guests want to simply relax while watching the work
in action.
